The Muse must go on… STOP!

Thanks to those ppl who were involved in the recent recording promotion project “The Muse must go on” to track their own original demoes…

We wish the promotion could go on for longer…. but with songs piling up waiting to be mixed and other projects due to start, we’ve decided to call time on this promotion project as of 31 May 2009.

At the end of the day, more than 1 hour of mixing work had gone into the mixing of each song. And I meant, really a lot more. Even thought the promotion included only 1 hr of mixing time, but we couldnt bear shortchanging you guys who recorded with us by stopping after one hour. Hmm.. we ended up shortchanging ourselves by using a few days to polish up each mix for free….

So for those waiting for their mixes…. have a little patience… the good stuff will be reaching you soon!

In case you walked past recently and saw this banner outside 42B Hongkong St…

Don’t be alarmed. We have been put ourselves up for sale. Dec 31 2008 was our last day at the HongKong St. We’ve decided to find a bigger and better place to house Backbeat Studios… January 09 was a busy month for us in setting up the studios… hence we havent really had time to update all our regulars about the shift…

Not to worry, all the good vibes at old Backbeat have been successfully “transplanted” to our new place, with a total of three rooms now..

New address is 215A Jalan Besar Singapore 208898.

Our studio line for recording and rehearsal services remains unchanged at 9677-5539.

Esplanade Waterfront Outdoor Theatre returns….

woohoo, my favourite outdoor gig venue is finally back… the esplanade waterfront outdoor theatre. it was closed for renovation more than a year ago, and then construction was halted for a while due to some money consideration issues… but finally it is done. best place to catch gigs, simply because of the splendid skyline and sea breeze…

here’s a clip of jack and rai opening for the aug8 gig as part of National Day Countdown. it’s the very first gig at this new stage…

Backbeat Goes Red on National Day

Save 43% on your rehearsal session this coming Saturday (9 Aug 08)!

How? Simply (1) come dressed in red on National Day and (2) play at least one National Day song in full during your session (you can play national day songs for the whole session if you like!). We will be on site to film a 43-sec clip of your session and putting them online!

Well,.. err if you aren’t Singaporean or arent too nationalistic, it’s ok. Stay tuned to our next promotion!

Mac or PC (for music recording)?

Mac or PC for recording

Mac or PC for recording

so should you get a Mac or PC?

if you are first starting out on setting up your gear for recording, you probably have asked yourself this age-old question…

check out what Greg Price said recently… “There are two prerequisites to becoming a great audio engineer,” said Price. “First, you have to play an instrument and second, you have to use a Mac.” (see full article here)

musicians will swear by a Mac for doing anything and everything music. if you had watched coyote ugly, you would know what i mean. i thought i should get a mac too after watching that movie…

but “sadly”, the first time i tried recording on a Mac, it crashed. and who said Mac doesn’t crash? it’s a myth! and it should make you wonder seriously if the myth that Mac is better for music can “hold up” just as well…

actually, first of all, i think it depends on which platform you started out and grew out with. when i had to get my first computer, Mac was in the fruity iMac era. PC was also cheaper and more compatible with more applications (and games!!) then. so i started out with a PC, experimented recording and mixing with some early version of Cubase.

fruity iMacs…, that was ten years back. during the last decade, with the whole new branding of Apple, it’s just so cool to own a Mac isnt it? but is it better than a PC?

Price-wise,… we have this perception that PC gives you more power for the same buck. actually, if you did your homework right and compare the prices and capabilities, it’s more worthwhile getting Apple MacBook or Apple MacBook Promacbook pro than a PC laptop. And Garageband comes free to record your demos…

of cos, Garageband would not be sufficient if you needed more serious recording and mixing work done. you will need the quadcore Mac Pro. that’s where the price factor is skewed towards buying a PC. Between a PC desktop and a Mac Pro, the price difference is almost 1 is to 2. (and i’m comparing a PC desktop with 23″ LCD with a Mac Pro without display).

can you do what logic can do on a Mac using a PC? sure you can! Cubase 4 is pretty cool (err. if the bugs are fixed). Pro Tools is available in PC too. and for audio wave editing, i personally believe Adobe Audition is the best audio editing solution around and it’s only available in PC…. so Mac isnt necessary better than PC, right?

here’s the caveat: i’ve been a PC guy all this while, but i got myself a Mac and a new PC this year. after using both with a variety of applications…  now, my christmas wishlist for 2008 is:

  1. 8-core Apple Mac Pro (with 30′ cinematic display)
  2. Adobe releases Mac version for Audition
why? PC gets slower and more unstable somehow the more you use it (you get full of rubbish in your registry, while Mac is relatively more efficient in handling applications. there’s just so much hardware conflict in PCs these days that seriously the amount of time wasted troubleshooting it makes the extra amount you foot for a Mac Pro seems dirt cheap. imagine buying a car that suddenly stalls when you are into 4th gear, and you are late for your most important date…
so if you are getting your first comp now for making your own music, consider a Mac if you want peace of mind. bear in mind that, yes, Mac will crash, but not as often as a PC. but of cos, your music would not sound better on a Mac than on a PC.
one thing to note though, some hardware aren’t working too well with Leopard… so i’m hoping everything gets fixed by Christmas.. who know, i may have the lead on Mas Selamat by then to have enough money to fulfil my wishlist… and have plenty leftover… ha! (no, mas selamat is not dead!)

Just Arrived: New all-maple Mapex recording drumkit!

\"Adrian, can i take your bass drum home\"

We have just shipped in an all new, all-maple Mapex drumkit for recording here at Backbeat!

For those who have been enquiring about drum recording the past few weeks, this is the new drum set that I have asked you guys to wait a while for… 6 piece set with 10″, 12″, 14″, 16″ toms based on FAST dimensions.

In fact, I only just set it up last night and the first person to try it was the very person who strongly recommended me to get the set,… Mr Brandon Khoo. He was here today with the Unxpected Band rehearsing for a gig tomorrow…

Seeing how happy he was behind the drums and hearing him play on them, ha, i know it was a darn good purchase,,, Pretty easy to tune right out of the box, big sound,…and if mr brandon khoo cant stop praising that it’s good, it’s gotta be better… and it can only be a Mapex! (right, mr khoo?)
